Ocean’s 15: Stealing Your Competitors’ Customers with Phantombuster

Here’s when thievery is okay: stealing your competitors’ clients. Phantombuster makes it easy.

We’ll share how to do this stealing thing the RIGHT way. It’s all fair in sales and marketing, after all.


First things first: you need to make sure that your idea of “value” is actually valuable. That’s the all-important first step in any sales process.

It’s much easier to sell to clients who have a clear idea of the problem you’re trying to solve. These are clients who have qualified themselves – what could be better?

You need to make a good impression right from the start. There’s really only one way to do that: make sure your product is worth selling. Your product should fit your audience.

Remember, you’re trying to get them to switch from someone they might already have an interest in to you. Obviously, you’re better. Otherwise you wouldn’t be in this position. So, make your value known.

Once you’ve cemented yourself as the right choice, it’s time to give one of these methods a try:

– Figure out where your competitors’ customers spend time online.

– Grab the data you need from that online space.

– Use clever tools & tricks to make that data work for you.

– Reach out. (Yes, cold outreach does work! We’ve proven it.)

Option 1: Use Their Reviews

Review sites are veritable gold mines when you’re looking for customers to pilfer. Seriously, there’s no shortage of customer reviews out there. Use them to find out what matters most to the people you want to reach. Developing an understanding of your target audience will help you connect with them on their own level.

You should be cold emailing these people. So, obviously, you’ll need their email addresses. As long as you know their first and last names as well as the company they’re working for, you should able to get those addresses in next to no time.

Step 1: Build a Scraping Recipe

You’ll need to use a tool called Recipe Creator to help you create a scraping recipe for the page you need to scrape. It does take some time to set up these recipes but they are reusable on any product page on the website of your choice.

Step 2: Scrape with Data Miner

Use the Data Miner Chrome Extension to scrape for data using the recipe you’ve created. This will enable you to download any and all relevant names, positions, industries, and company data.

Step 3: Phantombuster Matches Names & Domains

To grab email addresses you’ll need two things:
1. The names of company employees
2. The domains their companies use.

Your recipe will have given you the names you need and Phantombuster will reveal the domains. You’ll need to create an account to get started but don’t worry, it’s free. Phantombuster auto-checks searches in Google for company names, and saves the results in a .CSV file.

Here’s how to use it:

  1. To get started, select “Agents,” and then “New Agents.”

  2. Delete all the data shown on the form.

  3. Next, copy and paste this script (https://salesfla.re/CompanyDomainRetriever) into the box.

  4. Copy the data in the .CSV file into a Google Sheet.

  5. Paste the Sheet’s url into the available section in the code you pasted.

  6. Select “Settings” and make the “number of retries” more than 0.

  7. Click “Launch” and a file called output.CSV will download.

Step 4: Grab Email Addresses with FindThatLead

You’ll need to use a FindThatLead to grab all the emails under a domain, or more specific addresses.

  • For Domain search, you need the .CSV that Phantombuster created.

  • Lead search requires the .CSV that DataMiner created. Remember the .CSV includes the names and surnames, as well as the domains.

The full names are shown in a single column, which isn’t ideal. The easiest way to split the first and last names into separate columns is to use Excel. Select the name column, click “Data,” and “Text to Columns.” Be sure to set your delimiter to “space.”

Unfortunately, FindThatLead only gives you 10 free credits per day, so it’s probably in your best interests to upgrade to a paid account.

Step 5: Phantombuster Finds LinkedIn Profiles

Finding the above names and domains means that it is possible to find reviewers on LinkedIn.

You’l need to follow the same process as in step 3, but using a different script. (https://salesfla.re/LinkedInProfileFinderScript)

The good news is that Phantombuster won’t overwrite your data. Instead, the tool will use the first available column.

By now, you’ll already have hit the jackpot in terms of competitor data.

Step 6: Dux-Soup those LinkedIn Profiles

Dux-Soup is a kickass growth-hacking tool that visits LinkedIn profiles for you. This will help you to make awesome connections, leads, and introductions. Additionally, Dux-Soup will pull a ton of data from these profiles and deliver the results to you in a nifty .csv file.

You’re going to have to pay to use the “Revisit Data” feature. Essentially, you need to trick Dux-Soup into thinking it has already visited these LinkedIn pages. You need a .CSV that matches the required format, and the first and last names filled in.  (https://salesfla.re/DuxRevisitTemplate)

Paste your LinkedIn URLs into the “Profile” column, Dux-Soup will do the rest!

Step 7: Find Facebook Audiences

Dux-Soup will also offer to find email addresses for you. It works on a points system that returns one email address for every point you have. You can buy points or exchange for your email list.

Often, the addresses returned will be personal Gmail accounts. Most people sign up to LinkedIn with their personal addresses years ago, and never changed them. These same personal email addresses can be used to build Facebook audiences.
